'Stormbringer' is a damn fine album; hardly a bad moment on it. "High Ball Shooter" might be my favourite off of it, I think. And yeah, I might eventually head back at some point (the opportunity's always open), but I just needed to re-evaluate things; if I'm gonna do it, and do it properly, I've gotta start out on the right foot with a clear idea of what I'm there for, lest I risk wasting a few of those precious 50 years ;). And cats ARE great. Unfortunately I'm stuck with an annoying one - a fat, old, demanding, black persian, who mostly just drives me mental... But still better than no cat at all. As for gaming, I've mostly just been playing RPGs - 'Dragon Age' (which is great), 'Guild Wars 2', a bit of 'Torchlight 2', and the very early parts of 'Morowind'. I also played a bit of 'Deponia' before I got hopelessly stuck. I might have to consult a walkthrough and continue, though. As much as I hate doing that, I simply can't just stop playing that game; it's too likeable.

Well, there sure is a lot there for me to check out, haha. I've mostly just been listening to a whole lot of prog, and some new stuff here and there. Deep Purple's new one was on heavy rotation for me for a while (it had some pretty terrific tracks on it). I listened to Megadeth's new one a lot, even though it wasn't quite as good as I was hoping. Black Sabbath's new one is also good (but the best part of the whole thing is actually the bonus disc). And the new Queensryche and Black Star Riders (Thin Lizzy, basically) records are WELL worth checking out as well. And nah, I'm well out of school now (graduated in 2011). I actually went to university earlier this year as well (which I had to move city for), but quickly saw that it wasn't leading anywhere, and came back. So, I guess I'm in the same boat, in a sense - staying put for a little while, enjoying a bit of stability, and working when I'm able :).

Good to hear back from you. You're account was gone flat for a while; I was getting a tiny bit worried, haha. But yeah, life's going good for me. Where have you gotten yourself a job? I'm still yet to hear either of the albums; I've only heard bits and pieces from them. The tracks from 'Monster' have been somewhere between good and okay, but nothing that matches "Modern Day Delilah". As for 'La Futura', things look pretty promising. Fan feedback has been a mixed bag, but almost all professional reviews have been really positive. And Lemmy gave it his stamp of approval in a recent interview, so I guess that counts for something : )

So, overall, 'AL' has 3 good songs, a couple of okay songs, and a whole lot of unmemorable, lazy rubbish. A disappointment, really. There is so little creativity on this release, no experimentation to speak of, and minimal originality. I doubt I'll be spinning this much in the future, if at all. It's actually frustrating to see Slash release an album like this. Slash is a smart guy, and has proven in the past to be a decent songwriter and a stellar musician. He has the capacity to experiment, and he's in a position where he has the freedom to take risks. He's under no obligation to keep churning out simplistic, crowd-pleasing music, so why the hell does he? He's already an established icon with credibility and dollars under his belt. He's in a prime position to evolve as a musician. He SHOULD be taking the opportunity with both hands. That's how good artists become great, and how they stay interesting - by evolving. Yet, for some reason, Slash is sticking to a boring no-risk formula.

Unfortunately it's let down by some pretty lame lyrics, which prevents it from being a great song, and limiting it to just a good song. "Not for Me" is another song that lacks a pulse and bores me to tears. Thankfully "Bad Rain" comes to the rescue after it. That song's actually pretty damn cool, and the guitar tone Slash is sporting is really nice and well-suited to the track. "Hard & Fast" and "Far and Away" are both trite shite with zero replayability. Luckily the album finishes on a high, though, with "Shots Fired": hands-down the best song on the album. It's a standard rock song, yes, but it's actually got song kick to it, unlike two-thirds of the album. It's what a good hard rock song should sound like, and it's what I wish the rest of the disc would sound like.

Eh, after one listen, I gotta say that it really doesn't do much for me either. It's just too much of a stock-standard rock album; far too run-of-the-mill for a seasoned veteran like Slash. Almost all of the songs just range from 'mediocre' to 'okay'. So much of it feels thoughtless and effortlessly put-together. From "Apocalyptic Love" through to "No More Heroes", absolutely nothing catches my ear at all. It's just a blur of lifeless rock music. "Standing in the Sun" starts out promisingly, with a pretty cool riff, before it's ruined by an unimaginative chord progression and vocal melody put over the top. "Halo" is the first decent song on the album, since it's the first thing which doesn't feel like shameless filler. "We Will Roam" is a return to the realm of boring. "Anastasia" is a bit of a jump in quality, musically; it's the first song to actually have a somewhat interesting chord progression, and it has some really nice solos in there, to boot.

The lyrics of "Everybody" were penned by Don Walker. And yeah, they are a bit of a departure from Chisel's old lyrical work, but, after it's been 14 years since their last album, and 28 years since "the glory days", that's to be expected. I really like the lyrics, though. They're blunt, to-the-point, unapologetic, but mature and sophisticated at the same time

Yeah, there were a few that I wasn't all that fond off to begin with, but they soon grew on me. "Gotta Get Back On the Road" has actually become one of my favourites. "Our Old Flame", I kinda hated to begin with, but repeat listens revealed what a well-written chorus it actually has. "All for You" is also a grower. I didn't think that I would ever really like it, because I just found that it was trying to cover too many bases, lyrically (if that makes sense), and the music wasn't really interesting enough to keep me engaged. But it's one that somehow gets stuck in my head, and I find myself singing along to often, so that's gotta say something for it. I quite liked "The Horizon" from the get-go; it's a good mid-tempo track with a great celebratory vibe, I found. "This Day" is slightly weaker, but still enjoyable. "Missing a Girl" isn't bad, but it isn't really that good, I must admit - probably the weakest point of the album. And "I've Got Things to Do" is pretty marvelous, I think.

I've been into a lot of stuff, hey. I haven't been sticking to one style at all. I've just been rotating Opeth and Porcupine Tree because the albums arrived in the post just recently. But I've been mixing up everything from rock to prog rock to prog metal to soundtracks to folk to indie. I've just been coming across some really good names from all genres.

I know, man! Isn't it killer? : ) Slight stylistic changes here and there, but overall, it's the same Chisel I loved growing up. "Everybody" and "Dead and Laid to Rest" are all class, "No Plans" and "HQ454 Monroe" are all balls, and "Too Late" and "Summer Moon" are so much like classic Chisel that they could've been thrown straight into 'Circus Animals' and no-one would bat an eyelid. All in all, I couldn't be much happier with it. How's it treating you?
