1969 was a pivotal year in the history of western popular music. It witnessed both the concert that epitomized the 'hippie era', Woodstock, and that most often cited as signalling the movement's death knell - the Rolling Stones' concert at Altamont. Many albums which were to prove highly influential in the years to come were released, not least of these were King Crimson's "In The Court Of The Crimson King", a key album in the development of prog rock, The Stooges' eponymous debut and MC5's "Kick Out The Jams" which both signalled the first stirrings of punk. 1969 also saw the release of The Beatles' "Abbey Road", Sly & The Family Stone's "Stand!" and Miles Davis' career-changing "In A Silent Way", his first album to utilize a fully electric approach. The Beatles' "Get Back", the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" and Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" were among the most successful singles released during the year.
