anyone know of any compositions by morton feldman or other composers that sound similar to the choir and vocal stuff he did on things like christian wolff at cambridge, three voices, rothko chapel, and for stefan wolpe.

Stockhausen was rather eager to learn Feldman's compositional method. He must have been doing something right.

"One senses a connection to jazz in Feldman's subtly emotive chords. And beyond that, in the music's 'touch' and 'swing'. The touch is in the minimising of attack (...). The swing is in the rhythmic dislocation, a feature from the beginning but pursued most exhaustively in the long works of the last years, For John Cage being a prime example." Howard Skempton, from the liner notes of Music For Piano And Strings, Volume 1.

"[Morton] Feldman’s concerns about sound and structure – ears fantastically adrift, while keeping alert to the surroundings and open to the possibility of change – is second nature to improvisers. Feldman has more in common spiritually with AMM than he does with, say, Elliott Carter or perhaps even John Cage; and AMM with Feldman than it does with other approaches to improvised music." John Tilbury

The way a piece is played makes so much difference. I recommend "Piano and String Quartet" performed by John Tilbury and The Smith Quartet. It's so organic it feels like an improvisation. It bears no surprise that it's been released on a label dedicated to the documentation of British free improvisation (Matchless). I love the version by Aki Takahashi and Kronos Quartet, but Tilbury makes it even better in my opinion. I just love Tilbury playing, and the same thing applies to the other pieces by Feldman he played.

"I spent the weekend with Karlheinz Stockhausen, and he had a lot of my scores, and he took them to his room and said goodnight. And he came down in the morning and he said, 'I know you have no system, but what is your secret?' And I said to him, 'Well, Karlheinz, I have no secret but if I could say anything to you, I advise you to leave the sounds alone; don't push them; because they're very much like human beings - if you push them, they push you back. So if I have a secret it would be, 'don't push the sounds'." And he leaned over me and he said, 'Not even a little bit?" Morton Feldman

"Earlier in my life there seemed to be unlimited possibilities, but my mind was closed. Now, years later and with an open mind, possibilities no longer interest me. I seem content to be continually rearranging the same furniture in the same room. My concern at times is nothing more than establishing a series of practical conditions that will enable me to work. For years I said if I could only find a comfortable chair I would rival Mozart."
