Released 1970, on Chess. Charles Stephney, who also produced Ramsey Lewis, Ahmad Jamal's Chess sessions, and other jazz artists, was the maestro behind the lush music of this album. And, it couldn't have happened without the indescribable, 5-octave voice of Ms. Riperton. How can I stay neutral when I know for a fact that we'll never hear another voice like this in our lifetime. As a Chicagoan, and knowing that her daughter who can sing beautifully also, but chose the comedy of Saturday Night Live, I can only say that I had ALL of Ms. Riperton's albums, even her foray into rock music, and her voice overshadowed every instrument playing behind her. With Charles Stepheney's arrangements, he used her voice as an instrument, in the tradition of Ella Fitz and Sarah Vaughan. There are no sisters singing today who have this ability. God rest her soul.
