"Golden Gate" (1993) is yet another unknown gem by Goldenthal. The movie is probably so-so (I haven't seen it myself though), but the score can definitely be listened to even as a standalone music. This flute+saxophone+strings+santoor(or what is that indian-sounding thing?:) atmosphere is so mellow and at the same time memorable.. Moreover the saxophone is used in so many qualities througout the album, so rare these days!

And my special praise will be for... the "Sphere" soundtrack! My favourite score from him; at least the most leastened to throughout the years as I come to realise. Even though the film is not very popular and though I haven't even seen it so far.)) Overall atmosphere and this cold menacing trumpet.. -- definitely strikes a chord with me.

I adore Alien3's soundtrack it's eerie, depressing, empty, morbid, but so beautiful!...love it to death! Definitely the best soundtrack from the Alien universe. Soundtrack for Sphere is also stunning...especially the theme The Gift..when they see the spacecraft come out from the darkness.

That's right. Libera Me is really out of this world. It reminds me part of choir from The battle on the ice by Sergiei Prokofiev - the same expanding force.

you'll always find something new with each listen, like a harmonic line or an orchestrational detail...

What the hell? The Tempest is a very nice score. Nothing special in Goldenthal's discography, but nice and not easy as always.

My goodness, experiencing the score for "The Tempest" is an aural catastrophe! The cues are either boring or a pain to listen to. (Except for "Brave New World" maybe, which is not totally horrible. But boring nevertheless, unfortunately.) And the vocal parts are just ridiculous. (Except for the one by Beth Gibbons of course, which is utterly beautiful, but that doesn't rescue the whole work…) That is one of the most terrible scores I've ever listened to. Thank god it's so short.
