I remember Martin saying in an interview once that no matter how dark his songs can be, he tries to include at least a little sense of hope (or words to that effect). That was around the time of Playing The Angel...I guess we've come so far into the abyss by now that even Martin has given up hope.

Interesting point. I do think there's some hope building up in this track. I mean, the intro is very sinister compared to the "lighter" outro. It's like after Martin admits that "we've failed" you get this sense of someone or, more likely, something that will survive us and our failures. Our story ends, but we're not powerful enough to destroy the world as much as we can destroy ourselves.

I hadn't thought of it that way before, but you may well be right! I like that interpretation, that although 'we've failed', that lighter outro might represent hope for the planet and other, less foolish species than our own.

I find it a bit silly that the only thing your commenting on is the idea that you don't like that a 57-year-old man is swearing. If anything, since this is Martin's first use of 'fuck', it emphasizes how hopeless the future really is, as portrayed by the lyrics. Honestly, this use of the word works as intended, and more importantly, as a statement.

The Martin-sung songs are always among my favourites on any given Depeche album.

I think the vocal choice is pretty clear. Dave is the primary singer, singing the most singles the band has made. Martin sings more personal, poignant and sombre lullabies. His voice is not commercial at all like Dave's, on the contrary, Martin's voice sounds very vulnerable and thin when compared to Dave's. That's why it's great for lullabies. The songs Martin chooses to sing often sound nothing like the ones Dave would. The same description works for this song and Eternal.

I Always believd that he choses to sing the songs himself whose lyrics are the most precious to him..

For sure one of the more disappointing tracks on the album. James Ford drums really works against the rest of the instrumental here.

What? I'm a huge Martin fan, by far my favourite member and he's definitely the soul of Depeche Mode. But even I can admit this song is lackluster, at best.

After some time, the lyrics and vocals really do work all too well, but I feel like the instrumental needed more work. Still a strong effort, regardless.
